As many of you know from my Instagram, I was fortunate enough to visit the beautiful country Greece. During my time there, I visited an Island called Kythera. This island is said to be the birthplace of Aphrodite and is home to the famous sempreviva flower. Kythera is a 25min flight from Athens and is located above Crete. Kythera is my favourite place in the world and you’ll find out why if you keep reading. Just In case you decide to visit the island and explore it for yourself, here are some of the best things to do whilst there!
1. Visit the Hytra
Put simply, Hytra is a huge rock just off the coast of Kythera which is only a 6 min boat ride from the mainland. Hytra (aka The Egg) is famous for its magical caves and electric blue coloured waters. Anyone who has been to Kythera would defiantly recommend going to the Hytra. Once you arrive at Hytra, you will be taken on a tour inside the caves by the boats captain. You will also have time to explore the cave yourself. Just to give you an idea on the colour of the water, check out the image I have inserted in the slideshow below. Note that there is no filter on this photo and the colour of the water is actually this blue! Howeve,r as beautiful as it looks, the camera doesn’t do it justice, there is so much more beauty the eye can see than the camera cannot capture. On the surface of Hytra (the outside of the rock) the famous Sempreviva flower can be found. If this flower is picked in a certain time period, it will never die. Crazy it seems, but it’s true!
2. Fyris Ammo beach
Fyris Ammo beach is my favourite beach in the world. Although the photos I have taken cannot capture the absolute beauty of the beach, it does give you an idea on how magical this beach is. On the right hand side of the beach, there are multiple caves which you can explore for yourself. It is a great place for snorkeling and to just backfloat and gaze up and the beautiful cliff faces. Once again, the water is crystal clear and is a beach not worth missing out on.
Avlemonas is one of the most beautiful spots on the whole island. As you can see in the photos, it really does look like the best place to spend your day. There is plenty to do, from snorkelling, grabbing a cup or two of Greek coffee and cliff jumping too! With cafe’s and restaurants overlooking this picturesque bay, you can be sure you’ll have a great time at this spot.
4. Maria’s cake shop
If you thought the island couldn’t get any better, you’d be wrong. Maria’s cake shop is the place to go to for the best Meringues in the world. During my 10 day stay, I think I had eaten well over 30 meringues. This cake shop has excellent quality cakes and sweets! There are stores located all around the island so you are sure to bump into one. If you are planning to go on a diet during your trip, QUIT IT! The cakes and sweets are too good to say no to.
I could go on forever listing places to visit on this island, but I’ll keep it short. Next time you are planning a trip to Greece, make sure you visit Kythera for an unforgettable trip.
